Rachel is a Ph.D. candidate in linguistics at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Her research is at the intersection of sociolinguistics and cognitive processing, seeking to understand what individuals know about Grammar, including all components of language, and how they use that linguistic knowledge with respect to race and gender?
She focuses primarily on perceptions of African American English, and uses a variety of methods including surveys, sociophonetic analysis, electroencephalography, and virtual eye-tracking. Mentoring is one of her greatest passions, and she feels strongly that community support is the key to internal and external success.
